The NRRM's role in community and social development
The NRRM works with partner organizations and agencies to ensure residents are housed, physically active, safe, socially connected, proud of their community and able to access services that foster well-being. The Municipality brings various services and infrastructure, related policies and advocacy to its partnerships in an effort to realize its goals for the people of the Northern Rockies.
What are social services and community assets?
Social services and community assets include services, organizations and human capital that address the needs of residents, foster individual and collective well-being and contribute to a sense of community that motivates and sustains development.
The Northern Rockies has several social services and community services, including the following.
The Northern Rockies, supported by Northern Health, provides access to health care resources. These resources include five full-time physicians who work at a medical clinic as well as a twenty-five bed hospital.
Complementing these services are physiotherapy, optometry, dentistry, chiropractic and mental health services. Visit the Health Services page for more information.
Residents requiring the attention of medical specialists have the opportunity to use a Northern Health sponsored medical bus.
The safety of NRRM residents is attended to by a well-staffed RCMP detachment, a BC Ambulance station (with connections to air medivac) and Fort Nelson Fire Rescue, all based in Fort Nelson.
The NRRM has also recently been successful in establishing 9-1-1 emergency call service, and is actively collaborating with the provincial government and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission as they outline the transition to Next Generation 9-1-1.
The Northern Rockies is served by a number of institutions with a proven record of success. School District No. 81 serves the NRRM's K-12 students, boasts unique programs and consistently demonstrates high graduation rates.
Fort Nelson First Nation's Pre-K through Grade 12 Chalo School also supports local learners.
The Fort Nelson Literacy Society provides a wide range of literacy-related and support services including assisting with the orientation and integration of newcomers to the community and the country.
The Northern Rockies boasts many parks, campgrounds and year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. Among these, Liard River Hot Springs is a world-class experience and must-see for locals and travelers alike, providing a unique experience in all seasons.
The Northern Rockies Recreation Centre is the hub of community activity and the envy of other communities large and small. Along with several well-maintained outdoor fields host a variety of sports and athletic organizations throughout the community. Community and regional trails also accommodate walking, hiking and motorized recreation.
